Clinton and Obama Statement on Resignation of Secretary Alphonso Jackson

  • Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both made statements on the resignation of Secretary Jackson.
  • The statement on HillaryClinton.Com read as follows:

"Secretary Jackson's resignation ends a tenure at HUD marked by an indifference to Congressional oversight powers, cronyism, and corrupt contracting practices that have no place in our government. Yet while Secretary Jackson’s resignation is appropriate, it does nothing to address the Bush Administration's wait-and-don't-see posture to our nation's housing crisis, which is threatening to drive our economy into a painful recession. Now is the time for immediate action, not more half-measures and white papers. While I appreciate the Administration's willingness to acknowledge the need for more regulation of our financial markets, we cannot let a discussion about rearranging the regulatory deck chairs divert us from the fact that our housing and credit markets are in crisis, and are sinking deeper every day that we fail to take aggressive action. That's why today I am outlining immediate steps we can take to shore up the housing and credit markets, restore confidence in our regulatory infrastructure, and keep millions of families in their homes. These include smart, near-term regulatory changes that are calibrated to the actual crisis we face. And they include aggressive actions to help restructure at-risk mortgages and keep millions of families in their homes."

  • Barack Obama's website issued this statement:

"Secretary Jackson's resignation amid a housing crisis and charges of cronyism serves as a stark reminder of what's at stake in this election. It's harder than ever for working families to achieve the American Dream, and that's why we need a president who will cut ties with the special interests so that we can implement a plan that provides real relief to homeowners and prevents the lobbyists from writing the laws that regulate them. I've proposed a plan to create a new FHA Housing Security Program, create a new mortgage interest tax credit, fight mortgage fraud, and create a $10 billion foreclosure prevention fund. And on my first day in office, I'll introduce the most sweeping ethics reform in history, keeping industry insiders out of the regulation process and taking away the tools that the special interests use to curry favor. After nearly eight years of failed policies, rampant favoritism, and inaction in the face of crisis, that's the kind of leadership that America needs,"

Script and Video of New McCain Web Ad

  • The McCain campaign released a new web ad entitled "Character Forged By Family" on March 31, 2008.

The following is a video of the ad:

  • Script for Ad: ANNCR: The son and grandson of admirals. His grandfather an aviator, his
father a submariner. They were his first heroes, and earning their respect has been one of the lasting ambitions of his life. They gave their lives to their country and taught young John McCain lessons about honor, courage, duty, perseverance and leadership. Lessons he didn't fully grasp until later in his life when confronted with challenges he never imagined.
The family he was born into, and the family he is blessed with now, made John McCain the man he is, and instilled in him a deep and abiding respect for the social institution that yields the greatest influence in the formation of our individual character and the character of our society. Among the most important things children can inherit from their parents is a sense of purpose, and an aspiration to be part of something greater than their self interest. And that is the honor we earn and the love we give when we work and sacrifice with others for a cause greater than our self-interest. For John Sidney McCain, that cause has been our country.

Obama Statement on Report of the Trustees of Social Security and Medicare

  • On March 27, 2008 the Obama Campaign issued the following statement:

Chicago, IL - Senator Obama issued the following statement today in response to the Report of the Trustees of Social Security and Medicare.

"Today's report should give Americans confidence that we can keep Social Security strong for future generations if we come together and address its real but manageable long-term cash flow issue. But the report also shows the cost of Washington's failure to overcome the special interests and pass health care reform that expands coverage and lower costs, which would keep Medicare strong and affordable for America's seniors. As president, I will reduce costs in the Medicare program by enacting reforms to lower the price of prescription drugs, ending the subsidies for private insurers in the Medicare Advantage program and focusing resources on prevention and effective chronic disease management. I'll also bring Democrats and Republicans together to provide every single American with affordable, available health care that reduces health care costs by $2,500 per family. By investing in proven measures to improve the health of all Americans and reduce health care cost across the economy, we can ensure that the Medicare program remains strong for future generations."

MoveOn.Org Responds to Threat By Democratic Fundraisers

Related Post: How Will the MoveOn.Org Factor Play Into Super Tuesday Results?

  • CNN reports that "Twenty of Clinton's major donors sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Wednesday that suggested they might rethink their support for the party's congressional efforts this cycle if Pelosi did not alter her publicly stated view that superdelegates should support the party's pledged delegate leader -- a position that would be fatal to Clinton's presidential bid. "We have been strong supporters of the DCCC," they wrote. "We therefore urge you to clarify your position on superdelegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the National Convention in August." The DCCC -- Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee -- assists the party's House candidates.

  • In response MoveOn.org announced its fundraising drive to demonstrate its support for Pelosi's position saying "It's the worst kind of insider politics -- billionaires bullying our elected leaders into ignoring the will of the voters," in an e-mail to the group's members. "But when we all pool our resources, together we're stronger than the fat cats. So let's tell Nancy Pelosi that if she keeps standing up for regular Americans, thousands of us will have her back. And we can more than match whatever the CEOs and billionaires refuse to contribute."

  • MoveOn.Org has also started a petition to "Stop insider politics from deciding this election" on their website.

  • The Center for Responsive Politics reported Thursday that the 20 Clinton donors who signed the letter to Pelosi had collectively contributed nearly $24 million to Democratic candidates and committees over the last decade, including more than $500,000 to Clinton's senate and presidential campaigns and leadership PAC. They have collectively donated less than a tenth of that amount to Obama.

McCain Campaign Statement on Obamanomics

  • In a McCain Campaign press release today, John McCain 2008 spokesman Tucker Bounds issued this statement on Barack Obama's March 27, 2008 speech on the economy:

"No amount of rhetoric can hide Senator Obama's clear record of
embracing the liberal tax and spend, big government policies that hit hardworking American families at a time when they're most vulnerable, and are certain to move America backward.

"This election provides a clear choice. John McCain offers a common sense agenda to cut taxes, eliminate wasteful government spending, and get our economy back on track, while Senator Obama embraces the failed liberal policies of the past that lock down the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit that has always grown our economy, created jobs and expanded opportunity for the American people."

Hillary Clinton's Statement on Taiwan's Presidential Election

Related Post: John McCain's Statement on Taiwan's Presidential Election

  • Hillary Clinton made the following statement on Taiwan's Presidential Election today:

"I want to extend my congratulations to Ma Ying-jeou for his election as the new president of Taiwan. My congratulations extend to the people of Taiwan for their democratic achievements which have earned them the admiration of the entire international community. The people of Taiwan began direct competitive election of the president in 1996. Since then, the presidency has changed parties twice and voter turnout in this election was impressive, a clear indication of how robust this new democracy is.

The friendship between the people of Taiwan and the United States has remained deep as democracy on Taiwan has strengthened. I hope that under President-elect Ma's capable leadership, Taiwan’s political institutions will thrive, and that ways can be found to appropriately expand Taiwan's contributions to the international community.

Given the statements of Mr. Ma during the campaign and those of the leaders of the People's Republic of China, I would hope that cross-Strait dialogue will be possible, and will contribute significantly to a reduction of tensions in the Taiwan Straits and East Asia. Meanwhile, I want to reaffirm my commitment to the longstanding relevant principles of American policy, including the Three Communiqués and the Taiwan Relations Act."

  • According to the timesonline.co.uk "The United States, Taiwan’s main ally, has sent two aircraft carriers to the region for training exercises during the election. China fired missiles into the Taiwan Strait in 1996, in an attempt to intimidate voters."
  • They also reported that "Mr. Ma appeared at a final rally yesterday in the southern city of Kaohsiung. Echoing Barack Obama, he cried: “Does Taiwan want change?” The crowd shouted back: “Yes, change.”"
  • The Obama campaign has issued a statement on Taiwan's elections as of the afternoon of March 25th.

Hillary Clinton Admits She Misspoke While Asking Philadelphia Daily News for Endorsement

  • In her Iraq War speech last week Clinton said upon arrival in Bosnia in 1996 that "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
  • CBS Nightly News said "Those of us on that trip recall it differently. Instead of running for cover, Clinton was greeted by a school girl, who read her a poem of welcome" and the Washington Post published a photo of the greeting.
  • The following is the CBS video of Hillary arriving in Bosnia on March 25, 1996:

  • On March 24, 2008 Clinton met with the editorial boards of the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer seeking an endorsement by the Daily News editorial board.
  • Will Bunch, a senior writer at the Philadelphia Daily News writes that in his blog that "This afternoon, in the session with Daily News editorial writers and reporters (and some Inquirer staffers as well) in a conference room at the Daily News and Inquirer Building, I asked the presidential candidate about these discrepancies and also showed her a copy of the photo -- at the top of this post -- of her on the tarmac that day.

She was quick to answer, jumping in before I was fully finished with the
question. Here's here response in its entirety:

"Now let me tell you what I can remember, OK -- because what I was told was that we had to land a certain way and move quickly because of the threat of sniper fire. So I misspoke -- I didn't say that in my book or other times but if I said something that made it seem as though there was actual fire -- that's not what I was told. I was
told we had to land a certain way, we had to have our bulletproof stuff on because of the threat of sniper fire. I was also told that the greeting ceremony had been moved away from the tarmac but that there was this 8-year-old girl and, I can't, I can't rush by her, I've got to at least greet her -- so I greeted her, I took her stuff and then I left, Now that's my memory of it.

I followed-up, noting that the episode has raised questions about her credibility on foreign policy. She responded:

"No, I went to 80 countries, you know. I gave contemporaneous accounts, I wrote about a lot of this in my book. you know, I think that, a minor blip, you know, if I said
something that, you know, I say a lot of things -- millions of words a day -- so if I misspoke, that was just a misstatement."

Mar 20, 2008 3:00 AM (2 days ago) by Quin Hillyer, The Examiner

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has received more campaign money from disgraced lawyers at the controversial Milberg Weiss law firm than any other member of Congress, but she won’t say whether she’ll keep the contributions.

Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, Clinton’s chief rival for their party’s nomination, received much less money from the same lawyers but is likewise mum.

Clinton received $21,971 and Obama $5,300 from four senior partners of the firm or their spouses. Presumptive Republican nominee John McCain got no money from the firm’s four senior partners.

  • The following are excerpts from John McCain's "Statement On Fifth Anniversary Of Iraq Invasion"

"Today in Iraq, America and our allies stand on the precipice of winning a major victory against radical Islamic extremism. The security gains over the past year have been dramatic and undeniable. Al Qaeda and Shia extremists -- with support from external powers such as Iran -- are on the run but not defeated. Tough fighting remains ahead, especially in places like Mosul. Important political gains have also been made, but far more must be done in coming months to cement the gains made in huge cost in American blood and treasure."

"Americans should be proud that they led the way in removing a vicious, predatory dictator and opening the possibility of a free and stable Iraq. "

  • The following are excerpts from Ron Paul's "Statement After
10 Years of War with Iraq "

“The occupation of Iraq began five years ago today, but few realize that the march to war began ten years ago under Bill Clinton, when regime change became official U.S. policy. In 1998, I took to the House floor in protest of the Iraqi Liberation Act to warn that, ‘I see this legislation as essentially being a declaration of virtual war. It is giving the President tremendous powers to pursue war efforts against a sovereign Nation.’ My warnings were largely dismissed at the time, but five years later, we were bombing Iraq."

“As I have repeatedly said when discussing United States policy in Iraq, when you find yourself going the wrong way down a one-way street, you need to look for the nearest off-ramp. The only solution to the mess in Iraq is to promptly bring our troops home. Our bad policy spans at least ten years and two presidents and has had severe costs in lives and economic consequences. Continuing down the same road will solve nothing and compound our already substantial problems.”

Florida Democratic Party Says April Meeting of DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee is Next Step for Florida Delegate Issue

  • On March 17, 2008 the Florida Democratic Party issued a statement on the status of the primary.
  • The statement went over the various proposals that had been rejected to have a Florida re-vote/caucus, etc.
  • The Florida Democrats said it was decided not to pursue any further proposals based on "input" received that led them to the conclusion that "Florida doesn't want to vote again. So we won't." The source of the "input" is not specified so it is unclear if this was input from Florida voters, State or National Democratic Party Leaders or even the candidates.
  • They also said that the case to seat the delegates had been presented to the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee, but was denied and "that a solution will have to come from the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee, which is scheduled to meet again in April."
  • A portion of the Florida Democratic Party's statement is misleading when it says "When this committee (DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee) stripped us of 100% of our delegates last year (2007), some members summed up their reasoning by saying, "The rules are the rules." Unfortunately, the rules did not apply to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina when they, too, violated the DNC calendar by moving from their assigned dates." The 2008 primary/caucus schedule and the delegate selection rules were issued in 2006.

John McCain Statement on Tibet

Related Post: Statement from Barack Obama on Situation in Tibet
  • John McCain issued the following statement today on the situation in Tibet:

"The unfolding tragedy in Tibet should draw the attention of the entire world. I deplore the violent crackdown by Chinese authorities and the continuing oppression in Tibet of those merely wishing to practice their faith and preserve their culture and heritage. I have listened carefully to the Dalai Lama and am convinced he is a man of peace who reflects the hopes and aspirations of Tibetans. I urge the government of the People's Republic of China to address the root causes of unrest in Tibet by opening a genuine dialogue with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Reports of shutting down YouTube and confiscation of SIM cards are disturbing and reports of multiple deaths are far more so, especially in a year when China is preparing to host the Olympic Games. I urge the Chinese authorities to ensure peaceful protest is not met with violence, to release monks and others detained for peacefully expressing their views and to allow full outside access to Tibet."
