In an effort to put the candidates views on the issues in perspective I thought it would be relevant to post the Democrat and Republican party platforms. So often the political rhetoric is centered around which candidate is a "real" fill in the blank (Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Progressive, etc.)
My first stop was http://www.rnc.org/. I easily found the party platform under the "About The GOP" link. Surprisingly it was 90+ pages long. Not what I expected but, then again a symptom of the bureaucracy our nation faces. Imagine any public company with a mission statement 92 pages long. I do believe the message would be lost. What is worse is that in my eagerness to discover what the platform was I completely skipped the title of the document and started reading. By page two I realized my error. This platform was written for re-electing President George W. Bush in 2004. Going back to page 1 I now noticed the document was clearly titled "2004 Republican Party Platform: A Safer World and a More Hopeful America".
On to the Democrats now. Not surprising http://www.dnc.org/ is in step with the http://www.rnc.org/. The website navigated in a similar fashion. Under the "Our Party" link I clicked on the "What We Stand For" and then the "Party Platform" link. This time I paused to read the title "The 2004 Democratic Party Platform: Stronger at Home, Respected in the World". Alas, it is only 43 pages long compared to the Republican's 92.
Now that my interest is peaked it is on to the Libertarian and Green Parties. At http://www.lp.org/issues/printer_platform_all.shtml the Libertarian Party Platform adopted in 2006 is posted. It is two years more current then the two major parties and is 10 pages long. Lastly, at http://www.gp.org/platform.shtml the Green Party Platform adopted in 2004 is posted. It is 76 pages long.
It should be obvious from the name of this blog that I intended to provide fast, factual information about the election. Who knew it would be so hard to find!
