Montana superdelegate and state Democratic Party Vice Chair Margaret Campbell announced her endorsement of Barack Obama Monday, after hearing Obama and Clinton speak at the Mansfield-Metcalf Event and speaking with the candidates individually last weekend.
- Campbell was later forced to retract her endorsement due to Montana Democratic Party Rule 10 which specifies the vice chair - as well as the chair, executive director and paid staff - “shall maintain neutrality during primary elections for any office sought by more than one Democratic candidate.”
- “I am very interested in endorsing Obama, but party rules preclude me from endorsing,” Campbell told the Associated Press. “It's been emotional, it's been frustrating. It has been very frustrating. It is a huge responsibility.”
- If the endorsement had been allowed to stand it would have been the 69th superdelegate endorsement for Obama since February 5, 2008.
- Margaret Campbell is one of only three American Indian superdelegates this election year.
