  • Geraldine Ferraro, age 72, is a former Congresswoman (1978-1984) and former Vice Presidential candidate (1984).
  • She holds a position with Hillary Clinton's campaign on the finance committee and is the senior managing director of the Global Consulting Group, a corporate public relations firm.
  • Ferraro granted an interview to Torrence, California newspaper The Daily Breeze in advance of her participation the American Perspectives series held last Sunday at the Armstrong Theatre in Torrance.
  • During the course of the interview she said “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman of any color, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”
  • Since Ferraro made that statement she has received much crticism.
  • The following are quotes from Ms. Ferraro's interviews after the Daily Breeze story was printed as reported by the New York Times and Reuters:

“Every time that campaign is upset about something, they call it racist,”
“I will not be discriminated against because I’m white. If they think they’re going to shut up Geraldine Ferraro with that kind of stuff, they don’t know me.”
“And I said, ‘I think part of it is because he’s black,’ ” she said. “People are excited about this historic candidacy. I am, too.”
“I am livid at this thing,” she said. “Any time you say anything to anybody about the Obama campaign, it immediately becomes a racist attack.”
“I don’t want them (the Clinton campaign) to reach out to me,” she said. “I’m exercising my First Amendment rights. If they don’t like it, tough. I don’t intend ever to have anybody tell me that I can’t say what I want to say.”
"Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"
"My concern has been over how I've been treated as well and hurt, absolutely hurt by how they have taken this thing and spun it to imply that in any way, any way I am racist,"
