- John McCain was the exception. He took a time out from the campaign trail and hosted Republican Governors and his traveling Press Corp at his Arizona ranch on Saturday and Sunday.
- Saturday's guest list has remained sealed however, many of the press corp members have submitted their own stories regarding Sunday's barbecue.
- Approximately 40 journalists were delivered to the ranch in two buses on Sunday.
- They were greeted by John McCain who was already manning the grill, Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican-South Carolina, Governor Jon Huntsman, Republican-Utah, and former Senator Phil Gramm, Republican-Texas.
- John McCain wore a white sweatshirt with a silk-screened family photo on it, sunglasses, a green baseball cap and blue jeans. One journalist said "he looked like the all-American dad, with a story for every spot in the house. He explained that he loved to grill because it was social. He said it gave him something to do with his nervous energy while everyone could enjoy food and drink."
- The journalists were served chicken and ribs grilled by John McCain along with sides of beef tamales, hamburgers, sausages, potato salad and pastas.
- McCain's recipe for the ribs called for a salt, pepper and garlic powder rub and lemon that are cooked for an hour and a half.
- The meal was served on tables along the Oak Creek that runs through the property.
- The barbecue was reported to be an "on" and "off" the record event however audio and/or video equipment was not allowed.
- McCain showed the reporters the ranch's wildlife including "a blackhawk’s nest where he said he once watched a mother teach her baby bird how to fly" and told journalists that 67 types of birds can be seen on the property.
- The decor of McCain's house was reported as Southwest Navajo.
