- To qualify for the primary candidates had to file a declaration of candidacy and fulfill one of two other requirements. The first way is for the candidate to qualify for federal matching funds when Montana candidate filing closes on March 20,2008 and the second is to turn in the signatures of 500 registered Montana voters who support placing the candidate's name on the ballot.
- John McCain delivered 626 signatures, Ron Paul's campaign had 885, Hillary Clinton had 531 and Obama qualified with 606.
