Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts, III Endorses Hillary Clinton After Non Profit Receives $1 million in Earmarks in December 2007 Spending Bill
- The day before Martin Luther King Day Hillary Clinton received an endorsement from Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts, III of the Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem.
- The Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem is reported to be one of the oldest black churches in the United States.
- CNS News.com reports that in December Senator Clinton, New York Senator Charles Schumer and New York Representative Charles Rangel obtained an earmark in the $555 billion spending bill that was passed awarding over $1 million to Abyssinian Development Corporation, a community development non-profit associated with the church.
- According to the group Citizens Against Government Waste "The New York Sun linked $123 million worth of earmarks championed by Sens. Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer (both D-N.Y.) to the senators’ campaign contributors.[37]"
