AP: North Carolina Gov. Easley endorses Clinton for president

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Governor Mike Easley has endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

At a joint appearance in Raleigh Tuesday morning, the two-term Democrat said Clinton "gets it."
"It's time for somebody to be in the White House who understands the challenges we face in this country," Easley said.

Easley's endorsement comes a week before the state's May 6 primary. It's a boost for the former first lady, who is trailing Barack Obama in most state polls.

Easley is the second North Carolina superdelegate to endorse Clinton. Obama has the backing of six superdelegates in the state.

Easley and Clinton began the day touring a biotechnology lab at North Carolina State University.

New Australia PM Rudd Meeting with McCain and Clinton...not Obama

• Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is scheduled for a meeting with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on March 31, 2008 and Republican presidential candidate John McCain on April 1, 2008.
• He will also speak with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama by phone sometime this week.
• Rudd who was sworn in as Prime Minister on December 3, 2007 announced his support for Hillary Clinton during his election campaign last year.
• Prime Minister Rudd's first official act upon being sworn in was to sign the Kyoto Protocol. Subsequently in January, he declared funding for the homeless and he supports the withdrawal of Australian troops from Iraq.
• Bloomberg.Com reports that Rudd, 50, is in the U.S. on the first stop of a global trip to meet policy makers and corporate executives that will also take in China, Europe and the U.K.

• Pennsylvania Senator and Democratic Superdelegate Bob Casey and announced his endorsement for Barack Obama at an Obama rally in Pittsburgh today.
• To date, 13 of the Pennsylvania's 26 superdelegates have endorsed Hillary Clinton, 5 have endorsed Barack Obama and 8 are uncommitted.
• Pennsylvania's superdelegates consist of 13 DNC members, 11 State Representatives, one State Senator and the Governor.
• Of the 13 DNC members 8 are endorsing Clinton, two are endorsing Obama and three are uncommitted.
• Four of the State Representatives are backing Hillary, two are for Obama and 5 are uncommitted.
• As mentioned above, the State Senator announced his endorsement of Obama today while Governor Rendell announced his endorsement of Hillary Clinton back in January of 2008.

• In addition to the endorsement Clinton received in January from Ed Rendell she has also been endorsed by Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.
• The press release on HillaryClinton.Com states that "Dan Onorato grew up on Pittsburgh's North Side, was elected to Pittsburgh City Council in 1991, and re-elected in 1995. In 1999, he successfully ran for Allegheny County Controller and spent four years being a watchdog against wasteful spending and fraud."
• "Luke Ravenstahl, 28, was elected Mayor of Pittsburgh in November 2007, during a special election held to determine who would serve out the remaining two-year term of the late Mayor Bob O'Connor. The Pittsburgh native, who had served on City Council since 2003, holds the distinction of being the youngest mayor of any major U.S. city."

Barbara Boxer to Cast Superdelegate Vote, but not Endorsement for Clinton?

WARNING: The statement referred to below could not be verified so do not take it as fact until it is fully sourced.

• The Mercury News reported in an article on March 6, 2008 that "Barbara Boxer, one of the state's best-known superdelegates, has confused some by her stance.
• Boxer does not plan to endorse Clinton or Obama as long as both are running.
• Even though she has not thrown her support to either candidate, she does plan to vote for Clinton at the convention because Clinton won the California primary. Saying "the will of the voters is paramount," she hopes the superdelegates do not decide the nominee at the convention. "Part of me says, 'Let's make the most of this.' We're seeing a record number of people turning out in state after state. There is tremendous excitement in states that we will need this fall. But this is dangerous territory - you try to control what your supporters say, but you can't always do that."

• So far California Senator Barbara Boxer has not endorsed either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama heading into Super Tuesday.
• What role do family problems play in her decision?
• In 1994 Hillary Clinton's 39 year old brother Tony Rodham married Barbara Boxer's 26 year old daughter, Nicole Boxer in a Rose Garden Wedding. It was the first wedding held at the White House since the Nixon era.
• The couple later divorced in 2000 and reportedly Tony Rodham owes approximately $130,000 in back child support and alimony.
• Tony Rodham led a rather unremarkable life prior to Bill Clinton's first Presidential campaign. Among other things he worked as an insurance salesman, repo man, prison guard, process server and PI. During Bill Clinton's first Presidential campaign he started working for the DNC.
• 1997 through 1999 he began consulting and unsuccessfully tried to arrange meetings between Paraguayan President Juan Carlos Wasmosy, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia with President Clinton.
• In 1999 Tony and his brother Hugh attempted a $118 million business to export hazelnuts from the Republic of Georgia. When their business associate in Georgia turned out to be an opponent of the Georgian President the then National Security Advisor Sandy Berger became upset and the business venture stopped.
• Tony was also involved in the Bill Clinton pardon controversy and as recently as 2007 he was contesting a bankruptcy court ruling that he repay a loan from one of the now deceased pardon recipients.
