Unreasonable Man Ralph Nader makes it easy. Sure, he's owned corporate stock, dissed the Green Party, and been accused of "spoiling" the election chances of Democrats paddling towards the callow middle -- but what can he do for the Billionaires? The splash page for his website asks "which side are you on?" On one side: "Nader/ Gonzales '08." On the other: corporate greed, corporate power, corporate control, the health insurance industry, agribusiness giants, corporate criminals, nuclear power, big banks, drug companies, corporate Democrats, polluters, unionbusters, war profiteers, credit card companies, Wall Street, Big Oil, and corporate Republicans. Have I died and gone to Halliburton? Sign me up for Column B!

The 540 Club, in an old bank building at 540 Clement Street in San Francisco, is the only bar in town to call an elephant its mascot. A 300-pound stuffed pachyderm blobs on a ledge above the front door, a cast-off inherited after the San Francisco zoo shuttered its elephant exhibit. The bar's logo, a pink elephant found on its tables, its business cards and the forearm of its soda jerk, is described by the staff as "the universal symbol of alcoholism and sloth etc," and not as any sort of inducement to Republicans. In fact, the threat, in liberal San Francisco, of being labeled a GOP sympathizer never really occurred to the owner of the bar, Jamie Brown—until this week, that is, when he found himself debating whether to supplement the elephant with a stuffed donkey. The bar was set to hold a fundraiser for none other than the Great Spoiler, Ralph Nader. "What the hell?" Brown said Sunday morning, apropos of nothing, as he dragged on a Camel and waited for Nader's entourage to arrive. "Just in general, what the hell?"

Brown had sent two emails announcing the event. One said Nader would be coming. The other said this wasn't a joke.

• On his blog, Ralph Nader and his running mate invited Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain to join them at an oil industry protest.
• The protest is scheduled for Noon, May 20th, at the American Petroleum Institute located at 1220 L Street, NW, Washington, D.C. (Corner of 13th and L Streets, NW).
• The goal "is to protest oil industry speculation, manipulation, and conglomeration that is driving gasoline prices over $4 a gallon."

When Independent presidential hopeful Ralph Nader drew 3 percent of the popular vote in the 2000 election, he was accused of handing the election to George W. Bush.

Whether that accusation was fair or not, Nader insists that’s not the point.

“Why should voters be denied a broader choice of candidates?” he said in a Register-Pajaronian interview Sunday. “The two parties don’t own all the votes in this country. They don’t have a constitutional lock on the system. Parties aren’t even mentioned in the constitution.”

Washington, DC - The Nader/Gonzalez presidential campaign announced that it will protest the auto industry’s takeover of the federal auto safety agency, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), that Ralph Nader was instrumental in creating in 1966. The protest will take place in front of the NHTSA in Washington, DC on Thursday May 8, 2008 at 12 noon. Ralph Nader plans to attend the protest.

Nader said the NHTSA is about to implement a weak auto industry approved roof crush safety rule that would preempt state action. If the preemption rule takes effect, victims of roof crush accidents would not be able to seek justice in state courts under the 200-year old product liability common law.

Just read where Senator Patrick Leahy is calling on you to drop out of the Presidential race.
Believe me.
I know something about this.
Here’s my advice:
Don’t listen to people when they tell you not to run anymore.
That’s just political bigotry.
Listen to your own inner citizen First Amendment voice.
This is America.
Just like every other citizen, you have a right to run.

Ralph Nader, An Unreasonable Candidate?

• Ralph Nader, 73, announced his candidacy Sunday on Meet the Press. It is his fifth run for the Presidency having already run in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.
• In his previous campaigns Nader has run as an Independent and as the Green Party nominee. It is unclear from his website if he will run as an Independent or have a party affiliation in this year's campaign.
• He said "You take that framework of people feeling locked out, shut out, marginalized and disrespected," he said. "You go from Iraq, to Palestine to Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bumbling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts." "In that context, I have decided to run for president,"
• The home page of www.votenader.org asks "Which side are you on?" and then lists "corporate greed", "corporate power" and "corporate control" on one side and "people fighting back" on the other.
• So who is Ralph Nader? He was born to Lebanese immigrants whose native language was Arabic which Nader has spoken since he was a child.
• Ralph Nader graduated from Princeton University in 1955 and Harvard Law School in 1958 before serving 6 months in the US Army in 1959. The details surrounding his short stint in the Army are not readily available.
• He began his career as a lawyer in Hartford, Connecticut. Nader also lectured on History and Government at the University of Hartford between 1961 and 1963 before making the move to Washington, DC in 1964.
• He became a consumer safety advocate against the automobile industry. His efforts led to the passage of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act in 1966. This Act established the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
• Nader has founded many non-profit organizations and continues his activism for many diverse causes.
