6 Democracts and 11 Republicans in Today's Mississippi Congressional Primary

• In addition to the Presidential primaries Mississippi voters will choose candidates to run for two open house seats in the 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts.


• The 1st District seat was held by Republican Roger Wicker who was appointed to fill Trent Lott's Senate seat after his resignation last year.


• Democrat State Representative Steve Holland of Plantersville; Prentiss County chancery clerk Travis Childers; Calhoun City Alderman Marshall Coleman, and Brian Neely of Tupelo are competing for the seat


• Republican challengers include Glenn McCullough, Tupelo's former mayor and the former chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority, Southaven mayor and former State Representative Greg Davis, and Dr. Randy Russell, an Oxford ophthalmologist.


• Independent Wally Pang and Green Party candidate John M. Wages, Jr. will also run in the November election.


• The 3rd District seat is open for the first time in 12 years due to the retirement of Republican Chip Pickering.


• Eight Republicans are running for the seat.


• They are: former state Senator Charlie Ross of Brandon, John Rounsaville of Madison, the former Mississippi director of the USDA Office of Rural Development, Madison County businessman David Landrum, Pearl attorney Gregg Harper, James Broadwater of Flowood, Hardy Caraway of Quitman, Gregory Hatcher of Meridian, and Bill Marcy of Meridian.


• Democratic candidates are Randy Eads of Starkville and Joel L. Gill of Pickens.

• The Clinton campaign released an ad called "Level" today in Mississippi, one day before the state's primary.
• The following is a transcript of the ad:

Announcer: She's fighting for America's middle class.
Hillary Clinton: It's time to level the playing field against the special interests.
Announcer: She'll end $55 billion dollars in giveaways to corporate special interests and invest it to rebuild the middle class, create jobs, expand student loans, and cut taxes for working families.
Hillary Clinton: Standing up for people who weren't getting a fair shake, that's
been the purpose of my life. And it will be the purpose of my presidency.
Hillary Clinton: I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.

• Mississippi will hold its Democratic and Republican primaries on March 11, 2008.
• John McCain has already won enough delegates to win the Republican nomination. On the Democrat side the latest polls show Barack Obama leading Hillary Clinton.
• According to Rasmussen Reports Obama is leading Clinton by 14 points, 53% to 39%.
• An American Research Group poll of 600 likely voters March 5-6, 2008 showed Obama leading Clinton 66% to 31% among Democrat voters and Clinton leading 44% to 31% among Independent voters.
• The remaining individuals polled favored "someone else" or were undecided.
